Ezekiel 8:14-18

What does Ezekiel 8:14-18 mean?

What's easily missed is that these women aren't just casually sad; their weeping is a ritualistic act meant to appease Tammuz, a fertility god whose supposed death and rebirth mirrored nature's cycles. By engaging in this public, yet scandalous, display of grief at the very temple gates, they were essentially bringing their pagan rites into the holiest of places, blurring the lines between God's presence and lewd idol worship.

Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the LORD, and behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz. Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, O son of man? You will see still greater abominations than these.” And he brought me into the inner court of the house of the LORD. And behold, at the entrance of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men, with their backs to the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east, worshiping the sun toward the east. Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, O son of man? Is it too light a thing for the house of Judah to commit the abominations that they commit here, that they should fill the land with violence and provoke me still further to anger? Behold, they put the branch to their nose. Therefore I will act in wrath. My eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. And though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, I will not hear them.”

What Ezekiel 8:14-18 means

Ezekiel is being shown a series of increasingly disturbing visions of idolatry within the very courts of the Temple. After witnessing the "image of jealousy" and the elders' secret worship, he is now brought to a north gate where women are openly weeping for Tammuz, a pagan deity associated with fertility and nature cycles, whose myth involves death and lamentation. This scene marks a shift from hidden sins to public desecration, showing the pervasive corruption that has infiltrated even the holiest of places.

Idolatry Creeping into the Temple Courts

God's people were supposed to be set apart, but the temple, the very place of worship, became a stage for foreign gods. How does this happen?

Ezekiel is shown a shocking scene: women weeping for Tammuz right at the north gate of the Lord's house. This wasn't just happening in some distant land; it was inside the sacred space meant for God alone.

A Sacred Space Defiled

The north gate was a significant location within the temple complex. It was a place where sacrifices were offered, a place of divine presence. Yet, here, instead of devotion to Yahweh, there was ritualistic mourning for a pagan deity.

The Subtle Invasion

This wasn't a sudden, open rebellion, but a creeping corruption. These women were violating the Law by being in this part of the temple, and their actions demonstrated a 'blindest, because the vilest, superstition.' The sanctity of the Temple was being eroded from within, showing how easily foreign practices can infiltrate even the holiest places if vigilance is lost.

The Empty Tears for Tammuz

Why would women weep for Tammuz? What did this ritual truly represent, and why was it so offensive to God?

The act of weeping for Tammuz, also known as Adonis in Greek tradition, was far more than a simple expression of grief. It was deeply tied to nature worship and fertility rites, often involving great licentiousness.
