Imagine a world turned upside down, where the things we normally celebrate or mourn become utterly irrelevant. That’s the scene Ezekiel paints.
The prophet declares that the 'day' of judgment has arrived, a day so catastrophic that normal human transactions and emotions are rendered meaningless.
The Buyer's Joy, The Seller's Grief
Normally, buying land is a cause for celebration – an expansion of one's estate. Selling land, especially one's inheritance, is a cause for deep sorrow and mourning. But in this time of overwhelming wrath:
- The buyer can't rejoice: Any land gained will soon be lost to the invaders. The purchase is worthless.
- The seller can't mourn: The loss of property is overshadowed by the impending devastation and personal danger. The land would likely be seized anyway, making the sale a mere formality before utter ruin.
This is a total upheaval where the normal flow of life and value is completely disrupted by divine judgment.
