1 Corinthians 7:29-31

Paul isn't saying marriage is bad, but urging us to see how fleeting our earthly circumstances are, even good ones like marriage. He's calling for an unhindered devotion to God, a mindset that isn't tethered to the temporary, recognizing that Christ's return is imminent and will change everything. This means approaching all relationships and possessions with a lightness, ready for whatever comes next.
This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is responding to questions the Corinthian church sent him, specifically about marriage and singleness, and he's framing his advice with the urgent reality of Christ's return. He's just explained that while both marriage and singleness are valid paths from God, singleness offers fewer worldly distractions for focusing on the Lord. Therefore, he's saying that because time is so short, everyone, whether married or single, should live with a mindset that isn't overly attached to earthly relationships or possessions, as if they might have to leave them behind at any moment.
Paul drops a bombshell here: 'The appointed time has grown very short.' What time is he talking about, and why should it change how we live TODAY?
Paul isn't predicting the end of the world is imminent in the sense of days or weeks. Instead, he's conveying a profound sense of urgency. Think of it like a soldier on a mission knowing their deployment is about to end – every moment counts!
The Urgency of Eternity
This 'appointed time' refers to the period between Christ's first coming and His second coming. It's the era where believers live in a redeemed-but-not-yet-fully-restored world. Paul sees this present age as fleeting, a temporary season.
His point is that this perspective of time should fundamentally alter our priorities. If the 'main event' is truly on its way, then temporary comforts and earthly entanglements need to be viewed with a different lens.
Paul tells married people to 'live as though they had none.' Ouch. Does this mean marriage is bad? Not at all. It's about how we relate to our deepest earthly bonds.
This isn't a dismissal of marriage! In fact, Paul affirms marriage in earlier verses (1 Cor 7:28). Instead, he's talking about the depth of our dependence and devotion.
Freedom from Earthly Entanglements
Ask a follow-up
When Paul says 'live as though they had none,' he means: don't let these relationships possess you. Don't let them become the ultimate source of your security, identity, or joy. Don't let them distract you from the ultimate reality that is coming.
It's about maintaining a spiritual posture of freedom, ready to serve God wholeheartedly without being anchored to earthly possessions or relationships in a way that hinders your mission. It’s about loving your spouse deeply, but loving God supremely.
