Ezekiel 32:11-13

What's striking here is that the "sword of the king of Babylon" isn't just a human weapon, but God's direct instrument of justice. The verse highlights that even human actions, like a king's invasion, are commissioned and directed by the Lord to carry out His judgments. This reveals that God is sovereign even over the brutal acts of nations, using them to discipline and judge His people and others.
“For thus says the Lord GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you. I will cause your multitude to fall by the swords of mighty ones, all of them most ruthless of nations. “They shall bring to ruin the pride of Egypt, and all its multitude shall perish. I will destroy all its beasts from beside many waters; and no foot of man shall trouble them anymore, nor shall the hoofs of beasts trouble them.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God has just declared through Ezekiel a lament over Egypt, comparing its powerful king to a fierce dragon slain and cast into the sea. Now, the prophecy shifts to explain the immediate instrument of Egypt's impending destruction: the Babylonian army. This invasion, led by Nebuchadnezzar, is presented not as a random conquest, but as a divinely ordained judgment directly commissioned by the Lord.
Ezekiel proclaims a powerful invasion, but notice whose sword is coming. It's not just any army on the march.
The verse declares, 'For thus says the Lord GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you.' This is crucial! Even though the king of Babylon is the one wielding the sword, God is the one who has commissioned it. He is the ultimate authority, and human powers, even mighty empires, are instruments in His sovereign hand.
This wasn't a random act of war. God is using Nebuchadnezzar and his army to carry out His judgment against Egypt. It's a reminder that throughout history, God has used nations and rulers to accomplish His purposes, both for judgment and for His people's deliverance. The mightiest earthly powers are accountable to the King of Kings.
Who is "you" in this verse? It's more than just a king – it's an entire nation facing divine reckoning.
The "you" addressed here isn't solely the Pharaoh of Egypt. The commentaries point out that this judgment falls upon "both king and kingdom." God's justice often extends beyond individual leaders to the entire nation that participates in or enables wrongdoing.
Egypt, with its powerful military and historical pride, had become a symbol of defiance against God's people and God's ways. Ezekiel's prophecy is a declaration that their arrogance and their system of power would be dismantled. The "sword" represents not just military defeat, but a comprehensive dismantling of their authority and influence.
