The startling repetition of "sword, sword" isn't just emphasizing a weapon; it's highlighting that this isn't just a sword, but the sword, the divine instrument of judgment, now turned with consuming intent not just against Israel, but specifically against the Ammonites for their proud insults. This sword, polished to a terrifying gleam, signifies a final, unsparing consumption unlike the conditional judgments faced by other nations.
“And you, son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord GOD concerning the Ammonites and concerning their reproach; say, A sword, a sword is drawn for the slaughter. It is polished to consume and to flash like lightning—
English Standard Version (ESV)
Just before this, Ezekiel prophesied about the sword of Babylon hesitating between Jerusalem and Rabbah, the Ammonite capital, before turning towards Jerusalem. Now, the focus shifts to the Ammonites themselves, who had apparently been mocking and reproaching Judah during its suffering. This passage declares that their turn for judgment has come, and their destruction will be final, unlike the hope of restoration offered to Israel.
The Ammonites thought they were safe, even celebrating Judah's downfall. But God's judgment wasn't finished.
In this passage, Ezekiel is told to prophesy specifically against the Ammonites. This might seem strange because the focus has been on Jerusalem's destruction. However, the Ammonites had joined in the 'reproach' against God's people during their suffering. They mocked Judah and likely felt smug about their own apparent safety.
God's message is clear: just because Nebuchadnezzar's sword had fallen on Jerusalem didn't mean the danger was over for everyone else. The Ammonites' taunts and their belief in their own security were about to be shattered. This shows that God’s judgment is not arbitrary; it extends to those who stand by and mock His people and His justice.
The imagery of a polished sword is striking. What does this 'glittering' truly signify?
The text dramatically describes the sword as 'polished to consume and to flash like lightning.' This isn't just a generic threat; it's a vivid picture of terrifying readiness and imminent destruction.
The word 'furbished' means sharpened and polished. A well-maintained sword is more deadly. Its 'glittering' isn't just for show; it's meant to strike fear and awe into the enemy. In this context, it emphasizes the deliberate and absolute nature of the judgment coming upon the Ammonites. It suggests God's judgment is not a chaotic accident but a purposeful, prepared, and powerful force aimed at total consumption. The 'lightning' comparison speaks to its speed and devastating impact.
