“Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord, say: “A sword, a sword is sharpened and also polished, sharpened for slaughter, polished to flash like lightning! (Or shall we rejoice? You have despised the rod, my son, with everything of wood.) So the sword is given to be polished, that it may be grasped in the hand. It is sharpened and polished to be given into the hand of the slayer.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Ezekiel has just described a parable of a forest fire consuming the trees of Israel, and now he's commanded to deliver a direct prophecy of impending judgment. This prophecy is about a terrifyingly sharp and polished sword, which represents God's instrument of wrath, likely the Babylonian army, poised to strike down the people of Judah and Jerusalem. The repetition emphasizes the certainty and imminence of this devastating invasion and slaughter.
The imagery here is intense: a sword not just drawn, but sharpened and polished. What does this tell us about God's judgment?
The repetition of "a sword, a sword" emphasizes the certainty and severity of the coming judgment. It's not a vague threat but a reality being made ready.
Prepared for Action
This isn't about God wanting to judge, but about His justice and sovereignty in responding to sin. The tools of judgment are being made ready, signaling that the time for action has arrived.
This sharpened sword spares no one. Who does it target, and why is its polished appearance so significant?
The polished sword isn't just for show; it's designed to terrify and to make a clear, devastating impact.
