Ezekiel 20:47-48

Ezekiel uses the striking image of a fire consuming both "green" and "dry" trees to emphasize the totality of God's judgment. This isn't just about punishing the wicked (the dry, brittle trees), but also about a judgment that will sweep up the righteous (the green trees) along with them, leaving no one unaffected. The repeated phrase "flaming flame" conveys the unstoppable and pervasive nature of this impending destruction, impacting every "face," or person, across the entire land.
Say to the forest of the Negeb, Hear the word of the LORD: Thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour every green tree in you and every dry tree. The blazing flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from south to north shall be scorched by it. All flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it; it shall not be quenched.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage comes at the end of a chapter where Ezekiel has recounted Israel's history of rebellion and God's patient, yet firm, discipline. After detailing their ongoing unfaithfulness and the impending judgment of exile, Ezekiel is told to prophesy against "the forest of the Negeb," a metaphor for the land of Judah and Jerusalem itself. The fiery destruction described here signifies the devastating consequences of their persistent sin, a judgment that will consume all inhabitants, regardless of their state, from one end of the land to the other.
Why does God compare Judah and Jerusalem to a forest? And what's the significance of it being in the 'south'?
A Symbolic Landscape
God uses vivid imagery here. The "forest of the Negeb" (or "south") is a metaphor for the land of Judah and its people.
God isn't just talking about trees; He's talking about His covenant people, the nation He had placed in that specific land.
What does it mean for God's fire to consume both 'green' and 'dry' trees? It sounds like total destruction!
Universal and Unsparing Judgment
The core of this prophecy is the absolute and indiscriminate nature of God's judgment.
