This verse reveals a powerful paradox: God, who is the "light" and "Holy One" to His people, becomes a consuming "fire" and "flame" to their enemies. What's easy to miss is that this consuming fire is not a new attribute, but the very same divine presence that brings life and comfort to believers is the force that will utterly destroy the opposition against them.
The light of Israel will become a fire, and his Holy One a flame, and it will burn and devour his thorns and briers in one day. The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land the LORD will destroy, both soul and body, and it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
