The Sabbath wasn't just a day of rest; it was meant to be a tangible reminder that God Himself was actively setting Israel apart for Himself. It was a constant, visible sign of His work in them, proving they belonged to the One who sanctifies them.
Moreover, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them. But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes but rejected my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned. “Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make a full end of them.
English Standard Version (ESV)
In this chapter, Ezekiel is recounting Israel's history of rebellion against God, detailing their persistent disobedience from Egypt to the present exile. God is emphasizing how He has consistently revealed Himself and offered His promises, yet the people have repeatedly defiled His name by their actions. The mention of the Sabbath here serves as a specific example of God's gracious provision, intended as a sign of their unique covenant relationship and His power to set them apart as holy.
Why would God call the Sabbath a 'sign'? What did this sign communicate about Israel's unique identity?
God gave the Sabbath not just as a day of rest, but as a profound symbol, a 'sign' pointing to a unique relationship. It marked Israel as distinct, set apart for Him.
A Visible Token
Just like circumcision was a physical mark of belonging, the Sabbath was a recurring, visible sign in time that declared, 'These people are the LORD's.' It was a public declaration that they were His covenant people, set apart from the surrounding nations.
Remembering God's Work
This sign was also a reminder of God's creative power and His act of redemption. By observing the Sabbath, they acknowledged God as the Creator who rested and as the LORD who sanctified them, setting them apart for Himself.
The verse says the Sabbath helps them 'know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them.' How does a day of rest accomplish this?
The Sabbath wasn't just about resting from work; it was about actively engaging with God and recognizing His power to make them holy. It was a means for them to 'know' Him as their Sanctifier.
Experiencing God's Holiness
By dedicating this day to God—through worship, reflection, and ceasing from ordinary labor—Israel experienced a taste of God's own holiness. It was a day set apart, mirroring God setting them apart.
