The verse uses the image of a lioness to describe Israel, but it's not just about being fierce; it's about her behavior among other lions. She didn't just "lie down," she "couched" and "nourished her cubs" among them, implying a dangerous intimacy and a teaching of their predatory ways to her own children.
and say: What was your mother? A lioness! Among lions she crouched; in the midst of young lions she reared her cubs. And she brought up one of her cubs; he became a young lion, and he learned to catch prey; he devoured men. The nations heard about him; he was caught in their pit, and they brought him with hooks to the land of Egypt. When she saw that she waited in vain, that her hope was lost, she took another of her cubs and made him a young lion.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Ezekiel is commanded to deliver a lamentation, not for the nation as a whole, but specifically for the fallen princes of Judah, focusing on the current king, Jehoiachin, and his predecessors. The prophet is instructed to use the metaphor of a lioness and her cubs to describe the royal lineage and the nation of Judah, painting a picture of past strength and current decline. This imagery sets the stage for a prophecy detailing the tragic downfall of these kings and the kingdom they represented, highlighting their predatory nature and eventual capture.
What does it mean for an entire nation, and its royal family, to be compared to a lioness?
In Ezekiel 19:2, the prophet uses the powerful imagery of a lioness to represent the mother of the captive princes. This 'mother' isn't just a biological parent but symbolizes the nation of Judah and its royal lineage.
A Royal Metaphor
Think of it like this: the lioness represents the nation itself, or perhaps the royal house of David, which was meant to be a symbol of strength and God's favor. The 'whelps' or 'cubs' are the kings, the princes who followed.
Familiar Imagery
This metaphor would have resonated deeply with the people of Israel. The lion was a symbol of strength and royalty, even appearing in their own Scriptures, like in the blessing of Judah in Genesis 49. It was a familiar image, understood to represent power and regal authority.
The lioness didn't just live alone; she 'lay down among lions.' What does this dangerous companionship reveal about Judah's spiritual state?
Ezekiel's depiction of the lioness 'lying down among lions' and raising her cubs 'among young lions' is a stark warning. It points to the corrupting influence of the surrounding nations on Judah and its royal family.
Alliances and Assimilation
Ask a follow-up
This imagery suggests that Judah, and specifically its rulers, had become too familiar with the ways of the pagan nations around them. They formed alliances, intermarried, and adopted foreign customs, essentially 'couching' or making themselves comfortable in the midst of these powerful, often brutal, kingdoms.
Passing Down Corruption
The consequence was that the royal 'cubs' – the future kings of Judah – were not being raised in the fear of the Lord, but were being nurtured in the fierce, self-serving, and idolatrous practices of their 'lion' neighbors. This familial and national corruption was a direct cause of their eventual downfall.
