Exodus 8:21-24

What does Exodus 8:21-24 mean?

While the text mentions "swarms of flies," the original Hebrew word suggests a "mixture" or multitude of various kinds of noxious insects, not just common flies. This detail highlights that the plague was not only overwhelming in number but also in its diverse, likely horrifying, forms. The text further emphasizes the pervasiveness of this infestation by stating the insects would fill houses and cover the very ground they stood on.

Or else, if you will not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants and your people, and into your houses. And the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand. But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people dwell, so that no swarms of flies shall be there, that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth. Thus I will put a division between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall happen.”’” And the LORD did so. There came great swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh and into his servants’ houses. Throughout all the land of Egypt the land was ruined by the swarms of flies.

What Exodus 8:21-24 means

After the plagues of gnats and boils, Pharaoh’s heart remains hardened against God's command to let the Israelites go. Moses, instructed to confront Pharaoh early by the Nile, delivers a stark warning: if Israel is not released, a terrifying swarm of flies, a mixture of insects or possibly a specific biting fly, will descend upon Egypt. This plague, however, will specifically spare the land of Goshen where the Israelites live, highlighting God's protective power over His people.

Plague of the Mixed Swarm

What exactly was this plague? Was it just flies, or something more terrifying?

The Hebrew word used here, 'arov, literally means 'a mixture.' This points to a terrifying plague of various kinds of insects, not just common flies. Think biting flies, stinging wasps, buzzing gnats – a chaotic, overwhelming swarm.

Commentators suggest this mixed swarm could have been particularly devastating for the Egyptians because:

It was a direct attack on their environment: Unlike frogs that could be thrown out, these insects infiltrated homes and covered the ground, making everywhere unbearable.
It may have targeted their worship: Some scholars believe this plague specifically attacked creatures the Egyptians revered, like certain beetles or even dogs (linked to the god Anubis), adding profound insult to injury.
It was a divine declaration: This wasn't random; it was a calculated strike by God to demonstrate His power over Egypt and its gods.

God's Sovereignty Over Creation

How could God send a plague that only affected the Egyptians but not the Israelites?

This plague, like the others, served as a powerful demonstration of the LORD's absolute authority over creation, distinguishing Him from the powerless gods of Egypt.
