This verse highlights a miraculous distinction – God specifically exempts Goshen from the plague of flies, which were known to spread everywhere. This isn't just about protecting His people; it’s a deliberate demonstration that His power isn't limited to one place but extends sovereignly over all creation, even the seemingly chaotic flight of insects.
But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people dwell, so that no swarms of flies shall be there, that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth. Thus I will put a division between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall happen.”’”
English Standard Version (ESV)
After Pharaoh repeatedly refused to let God's people go, God sends the fourth plague: swarms of flies that will infest the land of Egypt. However, God promises to miraculously exempt the land of Goshen, where the Israelites live, from this plague. This distinction is meant to prove to Pharaoh and the Egyptians that the LORD alone has power over all creation, not their gods.
Imagine a plague so thick you can barely breathe, yet in one specific area, there's not a single trace. This wasn't just luck; it was a deliberate act of God.
The Hebrew word used here, which can be translated as 'sever' or 'distinguish,' carries a sense of doing something 'marvellously.' God didn't just passively let the flies avoid Goshen; He actively and miraculously separated it from the rest of Egypt. This wasn't a natural phenomenon that happened by chance. The flies, which naturally spread everywhere, were divinely restrained from entering the land where His people lived. This act of supernatural intervention served as a clear sign, a visible demonstration of God's power over creation and His special care for His people.
Why would God go to such lengths to protect Goshen? It wasn't just about saving His people from bugs; it was about making a profound statement to Pharaoh and all of Egypt.
The ultimate purpose of this miraculous separation was so that 'you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.' This phrase signifies God's supreme sovereignty, not just over Israel, but over the entire world, and specifically over Egypt at this moment. Pharaoh and the Egyptians were to understand that the God of Israel was not a local deity but the one true, all-powerful Creator and Ruler. By showing His unique power in Goshen, God highlighted His authority amidst the very land where the Egyptians worshipped their own gods, demonstrating their impotence in comparison.
