God doesn't just appoint Bezalel to build the Tabernacle; He "calls him by name." This means God personally selected and distinguished him for this monumental task, emphasizing that every skill needed for God's work originates directly from Him, not just human talent.
“See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God is giving Moses detailed instructions for building the Tabernacle and its furnishings. To ensure the work is done perfectly, God personally appoints Bezalel, a skilled craftsman from the tribe of Judah, to oversee the entire project, even highlighting his lineage. He is also given a partner, Aholiab, and a special endowment of wisdom and skill for all the artisans involved.
Ever feel like just a face in the crowd? God’s Word shows us He personally calls individuals for His purposes.
The phrase "called by name" isn't just a formality; it signifies a direct, personal appointment from God. It means He sees you, knows you, and has chosen you for a specific task. This wasn't a general announcement, but a specific designation for Bezalel to lead the intricate work of building the Tabernacle. This highlights God's intentionality in His plans and His desire to equip and empower specific individuals to carry them out.
The name Bezalel itself holds a powerful truth about divine protection and God's presence in our work.
Bezalel’s name, meaning 'in the shadow of God' or 'under the shadow of God,' is incredibly significant. It points to the assurance that those whom God calls are also covered by His protection and guidance. This wasn't just about skill; it was about being placed under God's special care as they undertook a sacred and challenging commission. This reminds us that God doesn't send us out on His tasks without covering us with His presence and protection.
Worried you’re not skilled enough for what God asks? This verse and its context reveal God’s commitment to equipping you.
The appointment of Bezalel wasn't just about selecting a leader; it was about God’s promise to provide the necessary skills. The Israelites, having been slaves in Egypt, may have lacked experience in fine craftsmanship. However, God assures Moses that He has specially endowed Bezalel and others with wisdom and skill ('wise-hearted') to accomplish His commands. This teaches a crucial theological truth: when God calls you to a task, He doesn't expect you to perform in your own strength or with your existing abilities alone. He actively infuses His people with the wisdom, creativity, and skill needed for His work.
