What does Exodus 20:1-6 mean?

This isn't just a preamble; "all these words" points to a complete, unified message that God Himself is delivering directly, not through a mediator, emphasizing its absolute authority and divine origin for the people.

And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

What Exodus 20:1-6 means

Right after God declared His covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai, the scene dramatically shifts as the Almighty Himself begins to speak directly to the entire nation. This pivotal moment introduces the Ten Commandments, God's foundational instructions for His people, which form the core of their covenant relationship with Him and guide their life and worship. These words, spoken with awesome power and authority, set the stage for the detailed laws that follow and establish God's role as their sovereign Lawgiver.

God's Direct and Majestic Speech

Imagine standing at the foot of a mountain, smoke and fire all around, and then hearing a voice that shakes the very ground. This is how God chose to speak His law.

Exodus 20:1 begins with the powerful statement, "And God spoke all these words, saying." This isn't just a casual announcement; it's a declaration of divine authority. Unlike later revelations that might come through prophets, angels, or even an inner prompting, these foundational laws were spoken directly by God Himself to the entire assembly of Israel. The commentators note that this direct, audible delivery, described as a "great voice" (Deuteronomy 5:22), was intended to impress the people with the gravity and origin of His commands. It was a deliberate choice to establish His role as the supreme Legislator, ensuring the people understood that these weren't mere suggestions but divine decrees. This majestic introduction sets the stage, demanding reverence and immediate attention before any specific command is given.

The "Ten Words" - A Foundation

What if the Ten Commandments weren't just a list, but something more fundamental? The original Hebrew offers a surprising clue.

The phrase "all these words" points to what the ancient Israelites and later traditions would call the "Ten Words." The original Hebrew (asereth haddebarim) literally translates to "the Ten Words." Commentators highlight that this name signifies the foundational and essential nature of these commandments. They are not simply ten separate rules, but a cohesive unit, a "compendium of morality" and the "very pith and kernel of the covenant" between God and His people. This wasn't just a legal code; it was the core expression of their relationship with God and with each other, forming the basis of their national identity and spiritual life for centuries. Their unique position—spoken directly by God, inscribed by His finger, and placed in the Ark—marks them as a singular revelation of God's will.
