Ecclesiastes 9:11-12

The verse emphasizes that even when people are equipped with natural abilities and wisdom, their success is not guaranteed because unexpected events or "chance" can alter outcomes. It highlights that while skill and effort are valuable, they don't override the unpredictable "timing" and circumstances that God orchestrates in life.
Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all. For man does not know his time. Like fish that are taken in an evil net, and like birds that are caught in a snare, so the children of man are snared at an evil time, when it suddenly falls upon them.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Teacher is reflecting on the unpredictable nature of life and work, acknowledging that even when people put their all into something, success isn't guaranteed. He observes that life's outcomes—winning a race, winning a battle, securing food, gaining wealth, or finding favor—don't always go to those best equipped for them, but are instead swayed by "time and chance." This observation serves as a caution against relying solely on one's own abilities or efforts, suggesting that God's providence plays a significant role in the unfolding of events.
We put in the work, we have the skills, we plan carefully. So why doesn't success always follow?
Solomon observes a stark reality under the sun: life doesn't always reward merit or preparation. The swift runner might trip, the strong warrior might fall, the wise might go hungry, and the intelligent might miss out on wealth or favor. This isn't to say effort is useless, but it highlights that human ability alone doesn't guarantee the outcome.

Solomon concludes that 'time and chance happen to them all.' This isn't a call to fatalism or an embrace of random chaos. Instead, the original language suggests 'time' as God's appointed seasons and 'chance' as unforeseen occurrences or divine appointments.

Romans 9:16Paul's statement that 'it is not of him who wills or of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy' directly reflects the Ecclesiastes verse's theme that human effort or inherent ability (willing or running) doesn't guarantee success, as divine timing and will are paramount.
Proverbs 21:31This proverb states, 'The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory belongs to the LORD,' which parallels the idea that preparation and natural advantages (like a swift horse) don't ensure outcomes; divine favor is the ultimate determinant.
Jeremiah 18:7-10God's sovereignty is highlighted here, showing that He can change His plans based on a nation's actions, demonstrating that even perceived certainties can be altered by a higher power, much like 'time and chance' can alter human endeavors.
