Jeremiah 18:7-10

It's easy to read this as God announcing a final, unchangeable judgment. But the phrase "at any time" ("at what instant" in some translations) reveals God's dynamic and responsive heart. He declares His intention to judge, but the door for a nation's repentance—and thus a change in His decree—remains wide open.
If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it. And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it.
English Standard Version (ESV)
God is speaking through Jeremiah about His sovereign authority over nations, using the imagery of a potter and clay that was just presented. This declaration is a divine principle explaining that God can decree destruction upon a nation, or conversely, promise building and planting, and His actions are always responsive to that nation's choices. This sets up the conditional nature of God's judgment and mercy, emphasizing that national destinies hinge on their obedience or disobedience to Him.
When God speaks of destruction, does that mean it's set in stone? Jeremiah 18:7 reveals a crucial aspect of God's interaction with nations.
This verse introduces God's solemn pronouncements of judgment. The repeated verbs—'pluck up,' 'break down,' 'destroy'—paint a vivid picture of utter devastation. However, the context of Jeremiah 18, especially verses 8-10, immediately qualifies these declarations. God's word against a nation is not a final, unalterable decree, but a divine warning. It sets the stage for a response. If the nation turns from its evil, God 'repents' of the judgment he intended. This 'repentance' doesn't mean God made a mistake; rather, it signifies a change in His action based on humanity's change in behavior. God's ultimate desire is not destruction, but restoration.
The word 'instant' appears several times in this passage. What does this tell us about the timing and nature of God's interventions?
The phrase 'At what instant' or 'in a moment' emphasizes the suddenness and immediacy of God's actions, whether in judgment or in blessing. It can refer to how quickly God can bring about ruin upon a nation, or conversely, how swiftly He can deliver and restore them. This highlights God's absolute sovereignty and power. He is not bound by human timelines or expectations. He can act decisively and unexpectedly. It also serves as a reminder to Jeremiah's audience of God's miraculous deliverance of Israel from Egypt—a powerful intervention that occurred 'suddenly' from their perspective, transforming them from abject slaves to a free people.

This passage echoes Jeremiah's message by showing that God's judgment against a nation or individual is conditional on their continued wickedness, and repentance can lead to a change of heart from God.
Jonah 3:4-10Jonah's prophecy of Nineveh's destruction is a prime example of God's decree to 'pluck up and destroy' a nation, but their repentance led God to 'relent' and withhold judgment, mirroring the conditional nature of God's pronouncements.
