Deuteronomy 34:5-9

What does Deuteronomy 34:5-9 mean?

The phrase "according to the word of the LORD" emphasizes that Moses' death wasn't an end due to weakness, but a direct divine appointment, a final act of obedience to God's command. It underscores that even the most faithful servants die not by chance, but at God's specific instruction.

So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. And the people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

What Deuteronomy 34:5-9 means

After a lifetime of leading Israel, Moses is permitted to see the Promised Land from a mountain top but is forbidden to enter it. Following this divine revelation, the narrative concludes with his death, emphasizing that it happened as the LORD had decreed. The text then shifts to describe his burial, the grief of the Israelites, and the succession of Joshua as the new leader.

Dying at God's Command

Moses, the greatest prophet, faced a destiny unique among leaders: he saw the Promised Land but couldn't enter it. His death, however, was not a defeat but an act of ultimate obedience.

Deuteronomy 34:5 states that Moses "died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD." This phrase, "according to the word of the Lord" (or literally, "at the mouth of the Lord"), highlights that Moses' death was not due to exhaustion or illness, but a direct divine appointment.

This was a final act of submission to God's will. For forty years, Moses had led Israel, spoken God's commands, and mediated between God and the people. Now, he was called to obey one final command: to die. The commentary suggests this was a voluntary act, stemming from faith and a deep trust in God's grace, even in the face of death. It underscores that even the most faithful servants ultimately live and die under God's sovereign direction.

The 'Servant of the LORD' Dies

Moses is called 'the servant of the LORD' in this pivotal moment. What does this title reveal about his life and death, especially considering he faced divine judgment?

The designation of Moses as 'the servant of the LORD' is significant. It's a title of honor, reflecting his lifelong devotion and service to God and His people. However, his death, though according to God's word, was also linked to a specific prohibition: he was barred from entering the Promised Land due to his sin at Meribah (Numbers 20:12).

This juxtaposition—being God's beloved servant yet facing a consequence for disobedience—speaks volumes. It shows that God's faithfulness to His servants doesn't negate His justice. Even for the most dedicated, sin has repercussions. Yet, the fact that he died 'according to the word of the LORD' also implies God's continued presence and care. As one commentator noted, he died 'in the company of Jehovah,' and was perhaps reassured by the promise of God's 'everlasting arms' beneath him.
