Ever feel like God's justice is slow to act? Moses reveals a surprising reason why God sometimes holds back His full judgment.
In Deuteronomy 32:26, God expresses a potential course of action: 'I would scatter them into corners, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men.' This isn't a hesitant thought, but a statement of what divine justice could do. God is perfectly capable of utterly destroying rebellious people, wiping them from existence.
However, verses 26-27 reveal a crucial caveat: 'Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the Lord hath not done all this.'
This means God's full judgment is sometimes restrained, not because the people don't deserve it, but to prevent God's enemies from arrogantly taking credit for His work. God's ultimate goal is to be recognized as God. Allowing enemies to claim victory over God's people would obscure His power and sovereignty. Therefore, for the sake of His own name and glory, God sometimes holds back the immediate, total annihilation that sin deserves.
