Deuteronomy 31:14-16

What does Deuteronomy 31:14-16 mean?

The text doesn't just say Joshua "goes" with Moses; it says they are to "present yourselves," a phrase used for taking a stance before God, highlighting that this isn't just a handover but a sacred commissioning. This moment is a public, God-ordained transition, ensuring Joshua's authority is established not just by Moses, but by God Himself.

And the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, the days approach when you must die. Call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may commission him.” And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tent of meeting. And the LORD appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud. And the pillar of cloud stood over the entrance of the tent. And the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Then this people will rise and whore after the foreign gods among them in the land that they are entering, and they will forsake me and break my covenant that I have made with them.

What Deuteronomy 31:14-16 means

God informs Moses that his death is imminent and instructs him to bring Joshua to the Tent of Meeting for a divine commissioning. This sets the stage for the transfer of leadership from Moses to Joshua, as God prepares to address both men regarding the people's future and the importance of remembering His Law.

A Divine Hand in Leadership Change

Moses' time is ending, and a new leader must step forward. But this isn't just a human decision – God orchestrates it all.

The transition of leadership, even in the most critical moments of God's plan, is directly managed by Him. Here, God explicitly tells Moses that "thy days approach that thou must die." This isn't a surprise to God; it's part of His divine timing.

Divine Appointment: God calls Joshua to be Moses' successor. This isn't a promotion Moses decided on, but a commission from the Lord Himself.
Solemn Ceremony: God then instructs Moses to bring Joshua to the Tent of Meeting. This formal presentation before God's presence is a sacred act, a consecration for Joshua's new role. It’s more than just a handover; it’s a divine commissioning.
God's Presence: The fact that God appears in the pillar of cloud over the Tent of Meeting emphasizes His direct involvement. This visible sign assures Joshua and the people that this new leadership comes with God’s approval and presence.

The Tent of Meeting: A Place of Divine Commission

Why the Tent of Meeting? What happens in this sacred space that makes it the perfect backdrop for appointing a new leader?

The Tent of Meeting (or Tabernacle) is not just a building; it's the designated place where God's manifest presence dwells among His people. Bringing Joshua here for his commissioning is profoundly significant.

This was the place where God met with Moses and spoke to him, often represented by the pillar of cloud. Presenting Joshua here means he is being brought directly into the sphere of God's immediate presence and authority.
