What's striking here is that Moses emphasizes "this land, which we possessed at that time." This wasn't just some random handout; it was land they had just conquered and secured, highlighting God's victory through them and His trust in them to steward it.
“When we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory beginning at Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Moses is detailing the distribution of lands conquered east of the Jordan River to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. After recounting their victories against Sihon and Og, he confirms the specific territories assigned, extending from the Arnon River up to the Jabbok River. This allocation is significant because these tribes will be settling outside the main land promised to the rest of Israel, setting the stage for the conditions Moses will impose on them.
This passage marks a pivotal moment in the Israelites' journey. It’s about more than just dividing territory; it's about God fulfilling a promise in a way that requires trust and partnership.
Moses is recounting the distribution of lands conquered east of the Jordan River. This wasn't the Promised Land of Canaan itself, but territories taken from the Amorites (Sihon and Og).
A Land Claimed and Granted
This shows God's faithfulness in providing for His people, even in unexpected territories, and Moses’ leadership in ensuring clarity and security for these tribes.
The allocation of land east of the Jordan wasn't a simple handout. It came with a profound condition that underscored the unity of Israel.
The reason Moses is so specific about this land grant is tied to a prior agreement. The Reubenites and Gadites, along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, had requested to settle in these lands the rest of Israel had fully conquered Canaan.
