Joshua 13:8-10

What does Joshua 13:8-10 mean?

The verse emphasizes that the inheritance given to Reuben and Gad "as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them" was divinely appointed, not merely a human decision. This repetition reassures Joshua and Israel that this arrangement, predating the land division, was God's will, preventing future disputes and highlighting Moses' faithfulness as God's instrument.

With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them: from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites;

What Joshua 13:8-10 means

Joshua is an old man, and the land of Canaan is still largely unconquered, prompting God to instruct him to begin dividing the land among the remaining tribes. Before detailing the distribution of the land west of the Jordan, the text clarifies that the tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half of Manasseh, had already received their inheritance east of the Jordan, a division made by Moses himself. This verse serves to acknowledge and confirm that prior allocation before Joshua proceeds with assigning the rest of the land.

Moses' Authority, God's Seal

Why does the verse repeat that Moses gave this inheritance? What does this emphasis reveal about God's faithfulness and our trust?

This verse highlights the foundational role Moses played in allocating land to the tribes of Reuben and Gad east of the Jordan River.

God's Directives, Moses' Execution

Divine Mandate: The text, particularly in conjunction with the context from Numbers 32, shows that this allocation wasn't Moses's own idea but a direct instruction from God.
Moses as Servant: By calling Moses the "servant of the LORD," the text underscores that his actions were obedient and carried the full weight of God's authority. This wasn't just a human decision; it was God's decree delivered through a trusted leader.
Establishes Security: This repetition serves to solidify the inheritance. It reassures these tribes that their portion is divinely sanctioned and secure, not subject to later dispute, even though it was given before the rest of the land was conquered and divided by lot.

This establishes a precedent: when God commands, and His appointed servant acts in obedience, that action carries divine authority and permanence.

A Precedent of Possession

Before the main conquest and division, a significant portion of land was already assigned. What does this tell us about God's plan and His people's faith?
