Deuteronomy 2:4-8

What does Deuteronomy 2:4-8 mean?

This verse highlights that even though the Edomites (descendants of Esau, Jacob's brother) would be afraid of Israel, God explicitly warns His people to "be very careful." This caution isn't about military strategy, but about not taking advantage of their brothers' fear, showing that God's commands extend even to interactions with those who are intimidated by us.

and command the people, “You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers, the people of Esau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So be very careful. Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. You shall purchase food from them with money, that you may eat, and you shall also buy water from them with money, that you may drink. For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He knows your going through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing.”’ So we went on, away from our brothers, the people of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the Arabah road from Elath and Ezion-geber. “And we turned and went in the direction of the wilderness of Moab.

What Deuteronomy 2:4-8 means

As Israel stands on the brink of entering the Promised Land, Moses relays God's instructions for navigating the territories of neighboring peoples. This passage focuses on their encounter with the descendants of Esau, their relatives, who inhabit the land of Seir. God warns Israel that the Edomites will be fearful of their approach, and issues a strict command for Israel to exercise great caution and respect in their dealings with them.

The Weight of Brotherhood

Imagine encountering people who are terrified of you. How do you respond when those people are also your relatives?

God instructs Israel to pass through the territory of their relatives, the descendants of Esau (Edom). He acknowledges their fear, stating, 'they shall be afraid of you.' This isn't just a political or military observation; it’s a reminder of their shared ancestry. Esau was Jacob's twin brother. God’s command here emphasizes that even though history might be complex, there's a foundational brotherhood that requires careful consideration and restraint. Israel is told not to provoke them, to buy what they need, and not to take any of their land. This highlights a divine principle: respect and carefulness are due, even to those who fear us, especially if they are kin.

Caution in the Face of Fear

When people are afraid of you, it's a delicate situation. What's the wisest way to handle it?

God's command, 'take ye good heed unto yourselves,' is crucial. It’s not just a suggestion; it’s a directive for extreme caution. The fear of the Edomites could easily tempt Israel to assert dominance, to take what they felt entitled to, or to act out of defensiveness. However, God’s plan was for Israel to pass through peaceably, buying their provisions and respecting Edom’s land. This 'taking heed' means being self-aware, controlling impulses, and actively choosing restraint, even when others react with fear. It’s about ensuring their actions don’t escalate the situation or violate God’s specific instructions for this journey.
