God declared Sihon's land 'given' to Israel, yet commanded them to 'contend in battle.' What does this tension reveal about God's promises?
This verse highlights a crucial dynamic in God's promises: divine initiative combined with human responsibility.
God's Certainty
God states, 'Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon... and his land.' This isn't a suggestion; it's a declaration of future certainty. God's plan for Israel to possess this land was already settled in His divine decree. He sovereignly orchestrates events to fulfill His Word.
Your Active Role
But immediately after, God commands, 'Begin to take possession, and contend with him in battle.' The promise of possession doesn't negate the need for effort, courage, and engagement. Israel had to actively fight, obey, and step into what God had declared theirs.
This teaches us that when God promises something, it will happen. However, His promises often require our participation. We are called to be active participants in what God is bringing about, bringing our faith, obedience, and effort to the 'given' promises.
