This passage lists incredibly intimate relationships – brother, son, daughter, wife, friend – to highlight that even the dearest bonds are secondary to God. “If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter or the wife you embrace or your friend who is as your own soul entices you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which neither you nor your fathers have known,
English Standard Version (ESV)
God is giving Israel instructions on how to handle people, even their closest loved ones, who try to lead them away from worshipping Him alone. This passage specifically addresses private enticement to idolatry within families and friendships, following earlier instructions about public false prophets. The severity of the command highlights the absolute importance God places on His people's exclusive devotion to Him.
Who are the people you trust the most? What if they were the ones trying to pull you away from God?
This verse lays out a chilling scenario: the most dangerous threats to our faith often come from the people we hold dearest. God lists individuals with profound emotional and relational ties: 'your brother, the son of your mother,' 'your son or your daughter,' 'the wife you embrace,' and 'your friend who is as your own soul.'
Why These Ties Matter
Why would God demand such extreme measures against those who lead others astray? What does it reveal about His nature?
The stark, severe commands in Deuteronomy 13, beginning with this verse, reveal God's absolute demand for exclusive loyalty. The temptation described is not merely a minor deviation but a call to 'serve other gods.'
