The text emphasizes that the stone was cut out "without hands," highlighting that its origin and power are not human or earthly but divine. This underscores that the ultimate force destined to dismantle earthly empires comes from God, not from human effort or political maneuvering. It points to a supernatural agency that will bring about the end of all human-led kingdoms.
As you looked, a stone was cut out by no human hand, and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, all together were broken in pieces, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
English Standard Version (ESV)
King Nebuchadnezzar has just witnessed a vision of a colossal statue made of various metals, representing successive empires. The vision culminates with a stone, unattached by human hands, striking the statue's feet, which are made of iron and clay. This impact causes the entire image to crumble and turn to dust.
How can something 'cut out without hands' bring down a colossal empire? This vision points to a power far beyond human might.
The phrase 'cut out by no human hand' is a powerful declaration about the origin and nature of the force that will dismantle the kingdoms of this world. It emphasizes that this is not a human endeavor, not a political revolution or military conquest orchestrated by people. Instead, it signifies divine intervention. The stone is detached by God's own power, highlighting that the ultimate establishment of God's kingdom is His sovereign act, not a product of human planning or effort. This is a consistent theme in Scripture: God's work is often accomplished through means that appear insignificant or are initiated by His direct, unseen power.
Why did the stone strike the image on its feet? This detail is not accidental; it reveals a strategic vulnerability.
The image, representing successive world empires, is ultimately brought down by an attack on its feet, made of 'iron and clay.' This is incredibly significant. The feet represent the final stage of these earthly powers, a mixture of strength (iron) and weakness (clay). The clay signifies instability, division, and fragility, making this part the most vulnerable. The divine stone doesn't aim for the head or the chest, but the foundation's weakest point. This shows that God's kingdom often begins its work by addressing the areas where human power is most compromised and unstable, leading to the complete collapse of the entire structure. It’s a picture of how God’s ultimate reign begins to dismantle earthly power by striking at its most fractured and unsustainable elements.

The 'stone' that strikes the image doesn't just destroy; it grows. What does this transformation symbolize?
The dramatic journey of the stone from a detached piece to a 'great mountain' that fills the whole earth is a profound metaphor for the growth and ultimate dominion of God's kingdom. It starts small, seemingly insignificant—'cut out without hands'—but its destiny is global. This isn't about human expansion or political maneuvering; it's about the unstoppable, pervasive nature of God's reign. The stone’s growth into a mountain signifies that Christ's kingdom, though initially appearing small (like the early church), will inevitably expand, overpower all other kingdoms, and establish His rule universally. It points to a future where God's authority will be the only one standing.
