Colossians 1:25-29

What does Colossians 1:25-29 mean?

Paul's calling wasn't just to preach, but to be a faithful steward whose specific commission was "to you-ward" – for the sake of the Gentiles. This means his ministry was aimed at "filling up" the Word of God not by adding to it, but by fully proclaiming its intended reach to all people.

of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Colossians 1:25-29 means

Paul is explaining his role as a minister, linking his sufferings for the church (mentioned in the previous verse) to his divine appointment. He clarifies that this stewardship was given to him specifically for the benefit of the Gentile believers, like those in Colossae, with the ultimate purpose of fully proclaiming God's message. This sets the stage for his explanation of the "mystery" of the gospel, which is Christ in the Gentiles.

The Steward of God's Household

Paul calls himself a 'minister' but not just any servant. He's operating under a specific divine management plan. What does this 'stewardship' mean for his mission?

Paul's ministry isn't self-appointed; it's a 'dispensation' or 'stewardship' from God. This Greek word, 'oikonomia,' literally means 'household management.' Think of a steward in a large estate who is entrusted with managing resources and carrying out the owner's will.

God's Assigned Role

Divine Appointment: This wasn't Paul's idea. God 'gave' him this role. It signifies an official commission and responsibility.
For the Church: The stewardship was given 'for you' (referring to the church, specifically the Gentiles). His management was focused on their spiritual well-being and growth.
Fulfilling God's Plan: The ultimate goal of this stewardship was 'to make the word of God fully known.' It was about ensuring God's message was completely and effectively communicated.

Completing the Divine Message

Paul's mission was to 'make the word of God fully known.' What does it mean to 'fulfill' God's Word, especially when the message itself is already complete?

The phrase 'to make the word of God fully known' (or 'to fulfill the word of God') might sound like the message itself was lacking. But the commentators clarify: it's not about adding to the Word, but about its complete proclamation and universal reach.
