Amos doesn't just say these oppressors "take from" the poor; he uses the image of them "swallowing them up," a vivid picture of utter consumption. This isn't just about taking their possessions, but about actively aiming to make them cease to exist as viable members of society, even driving them to sell themselves into slavery.
Hear this, you who trample on the needy and bring the poor of the land to an end, saying, “When will the new moon be over, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may offer wheat for sale, that we may make the ephah small and the shekel great and deal deceitfully with false balances, that we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals and sell the chaff of the wheat?”
English Standard Version (ESV)

This condemnation sets the stage for the specific examples of their corrupt business practices that follow.
The prophet Amos uses a startling image to describe the powerful and wealthy in Israel. They aren't just ignoring the poor; they're actively consuming them.
Amos calls out those who 'swallow up the needy.' This isn't a gentle metaphor. Think of a predator devouring its prey, or larger fish consuming smaller ones.
What does it mean for the poor to 'fail'? It's more than just being poor; it's about a systematic removal from society.
The phrase 'to make the poor of the land to fail' carries a chilling weight.
