The Israelites' demand for gods to "go before them" highlights a deep-seated impatience and a desire for tangible, controllable leadership. They dismiss Moses, the very one who miraculously led them out of Egypt, out of sight and out of mind, revealing their tendency to abandon their divinely appointed guide for something they can manufacture themselves. This reveals a fundamental distrust in God's unseen presence and provision when things don't happen on their timeline.
saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Stephen recounts how, while Moses was away receiving God's law on Mount Sinai, the Israelites grew impatient and demanded Aaron create gods to lead them. They had lost faith in Moses, the one who had dramatically rescued them from Egypt, and were reverting to Egyptian idolatry. This ultimately led to the creation of the golden calf and their offering sacrifices to it, a profound betrayal of God's command and deliverance.
Moses is gone, just for a little while, and the people are already restless. What does this impatience reveal about their hearts?
Stephen highlights the Israelites' profound lack of trust and their quick descent into idolatry. After experiencing God's mighty deliverance from Egypt, they're not content to wait for His continued guidance. Their impatience and forgetfulness of God's power lead them to demand tangible 'gods' to lead them, mirroring the idolatrous practices of Egypt they were just freed from. It’s a stark reminder that even after incredible acts of salvation, the human heart can quickly turn away from God when tested.
Why did the Israelites want 'gods who will go before us'? What does this reveal about their understanding of God?
The demand for 'gods to go before us' reveals a desire for a god they can control and see, a stark contrast to the unseen, sovereign God of Israel. They wanted a visible, tangible presence, much like the idols of Egypt, rather than trusting the invisible God who had already demonstrated His power. This isn't just about making a golden calf; it’s about reducing God to fit our expectations and comfort levels. True faith trusts God's presence and guidance, even when it's not easily visible or convenient.
