The text doesn't just say they "appointed a leader" to return to Egypt; it says they "appointed a leader to return to their bondage." This subtle but significant detail highlights their deliberate choice to go back to slavery, making their rejection of God's wonders and their hard-heartedness even more profound.
They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them. Even when they had made for themselves a golden calf and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed great blasphemies,
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse recounts a specific moment of rebellion after Israel's miraculous exodus from Egypt. Despite witnessing God’s incredible acts, the people chose not to obey, even attempting to appoint a leader to return to slavery in Egypt. This act of defiance is immediately contrasted with the Lord’s enduring character as a forgiving, gracious, and merciful God who remained faithful to them.
Ever feel like you're going through the motions, forgetting the amazing things God has done? This verse points to a dangerous pattern.
The Israelites, even after witnessing God's incredible power, chose to forget.
Choosing to Forget
They 'refused to obey' and were 'not mindful of the wonders.' This wasn't just a momentary lapse; it was a hardened heart that actively ignored God's past faithfulness. They didn't just fail to remember the plagues in Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, or the daily provision of manna – they chose not to be mindful.
The Desire to Return
This forgetfulness led them to a shocking desire: to appoint a leader and go back to slavery in Egypt. It’s mind-boggling! They were willing to trade God's freedom and provision for the familiar chains of bondage. This highlights how easily we can become so comfortable or so rebellious that we yearn for the very things God has rescued us from.
When people fail, God doesn't. This passage reveals the unchanging nature of our Creator.
Right after listing Israel's rebellion, the text pivots to describe God's enduring character. It’s a powerful reminder that His faithfulness isn't dependent on our obedience.
A God of Forgivenesses
The verse states, 'But you are a God ready to forgive...' The Hebrew word here is rich, suggesting not just a single act of forgiveness, but a God who is a fountain of forgivenesses, continually forgiving.

Slow to Anger, Rich in Love
We see the classic biblical description of God: 'gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.' This isn't just a nice saying; it's God's fundamental nature. He is patient, compassionate, and His love is an overwhelming, abundant reality.
Never Forsaking
Have you ever been held accountable for what you intended to do? This verse sheds light on that idea.
The Israelites 'appointed a leader to return to their bondage.' While the text in Numbers shows them proposing this, here in Nehemiah, it's stated as if it happened. This raises a fascinating point about spiritual accountability.
The Weight of Intent
Commentators note that the Israelites' firm intention and resolution to turn back to Egypt was considered by God as morally equivalent to the act itself. Their hardened hearts and deliberate planning were enough to constitute rebellion in God's eyes. It wasn't just a casual thought; it was a decision.
A Shift in Translation
Some scholars suggest a slight difference in the original Hebrew, potentially reading 'in Egypt' instead of 'in their rebellion.' Regardless of the exact wording, the core idea remains: their rebellion was so profound that it led them to actively plan a return to their enslavement.
