What's striking here is David's immediate, profound regret. He doesn't just feel bad; his "heart struck him," a visceral reaction, showing how deeply the reality of his sin hit him. This wasn't a calculated apology, but a gut-wrenching confession, revealing that his foolishness had consequences he hadn't fully grasped until that moment.
But David’s heart struck him after he had numbered the people. And David said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O LORD, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Fresh off a difficult war and with Israel at peace, King David impulsively ordered a census of all fighting men. This action, however, was not commanded by God and deeply troubled David after its completion, leading him to confess his sin and folly to the Lord. The aftermath of this census will bring further consequences, including a plague upon Israel.
David took a census, and suddenly, his heart was struck. What does it mean for your heart to 'strike' you?
The Hebrew word used here for David's heart being 'struck' or 'smitten' (plural form of 'lev') conveys a deep sense of distress and conviction. It wasn't just a mild regret; it was a piercing realization of wrongdoing.
David calls his action 'very foolishly.' What made this census so wrong in God's eyes?
David's census was not merely a military headcount; it represented a deep-seated issue of trust.
