David appeals to God's "steadfast love" and "abundant mercy" not as mere pleasant characteristics, but as the very foundation and extent of the pardon he desperately seeks. He bases his audacious request for "blotting out" his transgressions entirely on the immeasurable nature of God's compassion, acknowledging that his sin is vast, but God's mercy is even vaster.
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This psalm is David's raw confession after his devastating sin with Bathsheba and the subsequent murder of Uriah. It's a desperate plea for forgiveness, not based on any merit of his own, but entirely on God's immense mercy and steadfast love. David understands the gravity of his actions and how they've fractured his relationship with God, leading him to pour out his heart in this deeply personal lament.
David isn't just sorry for what he did; he's looking to who God IS. This prayer is rooted not in David's feelings, but in God's nature.
When David cries out, "Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy...", he's not just listing desirable qualities. He's appealing to the very core of God's revealed character.
David’s prayer isn't a desperate gamble; it’s an informed plea. He knows God's character, as revealed in passages like Exodus 34:6-7, and he’s banking his hope on it. True repentance doesn't just focus on past wrongs, but on the unchanging goodness of God.
David doesn't just want his sins forgiven; he wants them gone. What does it mean to 'blot out' our transgressions?
The phrase 'blot out my transgressions' is more than just a request for pardon. It uses imagery that speaks to a complete removal and cancellation.

This passage describes God's character as 'merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.' This directly echoes the plea in Psalm 51:1 for mercy based on God's abundant love and mercy, highlighting the foundation of David's prayer in God's revealed nature.
2 Samuel 12:13In the narrative immediately preceding Psalm 51, after David confesses his sin with Bathsheba, Nathan declares, 'The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.' Isaiah 43:25The prophet Isaiah speaks God's words: 'I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake; and I will not remember your sins.' Matthew 18:21-22When Peter asks Jesus how often he should forgive, Jesus responds with a parable about a king who cancels a massive debt. 1 John 1:9The apostle John writes, 'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' This New Testament principle of confession and forgiveness directly supports David's prayer for his transgressions to be blotted out, grounding it in the condition of acknowledging sin.
