2 Samuel 2:4-7

What does 2 Samuel 2:4-7 mean?

Notice that the men of Judah anoint David king, but only after they hear that the men of Jabesh-gilead had the courage to bury Saul. This suggests that honoring the fallen king, even one as flawed as Saul, was a crucial step for David and Judah in transitioning to a new reign. It wasn't just about David's claim; it was also about Israel's collective respect and memory.

And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,” David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, “May you be blessed by the LORD, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him. Now may the LORD show steadfast love and faithfulness to you. And I will do good to you because you have done this thing. Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant, for Saul your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

What 2 Samuel 2:4-7 means

After Saul's death, David is seeking God's direction and moves to Hebron. The men of Judah are the first to rally around him, anointing him king specifically over their own tribe. This act sets the stage for the eventual unification of Israel under David, but it also highlights a tribal division that will persist for a time.

The First Anointing: Judah's Choice

David's reign didn't start with a bang for everyone, but with a specific group making a significant choice. What does this say about leadership and popular support?

A King for a Tribe

The men of Judah, David's own tribe, were the first to officially acknowledge him as king. This wasn't a national coronation yet; it was a tribal affirmation. It highlights how leadership often gains traction from the ground up, starting with those closest and most connected.

Tribal Identity: Loyalty was deeply rooted in tribal affiliation. David's anointing by Judah solidified his claim within his own people.
Theological Significance: This act mirrored the earlier anointing of Saul, underscoring the idea that God's chosen king is recognized and supported by His people.

Uniting Past and Future Through Kindness

A shocking act of kindness towards a fallen enemy connects David to a surprising group. How does this event shape his path forward?

The Weight of Loyalty

The news about the honorable burial of Saul by the men of Jabesh-gilead deeply impacted David. This wasn't just gossip; it was information that carried moral and political weight.

Honoring the Fallen: Saul, though defeated and even seen as an enemy by some in Judah, was given a proper burial by the people of Jabesh-gilead. This act of courage and respect would not be forgotten.
