The most striking thing here is the timing – the news of Saul's defeat and death reached Jabesh-gilead after the Philistines had already done their gruesome deed. This wasn't a report of a battle's outcome; it was a notification of desecration, highlighting the immediate and brutal finality of the Philistines' victory and setting the stage for Jabesh-gilead's daring rescue mission.
But when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, all the valiant men arose and went all night and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned them there. And they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh and fasted seven days.
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Philistines have just defeated Israel soundly, and King Saul, along with his sons, has died in battle on Mount Gilboa. In their gruesome victory, the Philistines desecrate the bodies of Saul and his sons, displaying them publicly as a trophy of their triumph. This shocking news, carried to the people across the Jordan River, spurs an immediate and brave response from the men of Jabesh-gilead.
When the Philistines struck a devastating blow, one group refused to stand idly by. Their bold action echoes through Scripture.
A Risky Act of Loyalty
This verse sets the stage for an incredible act of bravery. The Philistines had just defeated Israel and killed King Saul and his sons. The news was grim, and fear would have been the natural response. Yet, the people of Jabesh-gilead heard what happened, and their hearts were moved.
Instead of hiding or accepting the Philistine victory, they chose to act. This wasn't a small, insignificant event. It was a dangerous mission against the dominant military power of the time. Their decision shows a deep loyalty to their king, even in death, and a refusal to let his legacy be utterly disgraced.
In a world often defined by conquest and cruelty, the response of Jabesh-gilead highlights the enduring power of human compassion.
Beyond Politics and Power
The Philistines' actions were brutal, a common tactic to demoralize and desecrate their enemies. They had dismembered the bodies of Saul and his sons and displayed them as trophies.
The inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead, however, saw beyond the political and military victory of the Philistines. They saw the broken bodies of their countrymen, their king, and his sons. Their response wasn't driven by strategy or self-preservation, but by a profound sense of humanity and respect for the dead. They chose to honor the deceased and provide a proper burial, a fundamental act of compassion that transcends conflict.
