The king's immediate suspicion isn't that the Syrians left, but that they're setting a trap, revealing his deep distrust and the desperate fear that grips the besieged city. He assumes the worst possible motive – not a retreat, but a cunning deception to lure them out to their doom. This shows how fear can warp our perception, making us see enemies everywhere, even when freedom might be at hand.
And the king rose in the night and said to his servants, “I will tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry. Therefore they have gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the open country, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive and get into the city.’”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Earlier in the chapter, four starving lepers discovered the abandoned Syrian camp, filled with provisions. Now, the king, suspicious of this good news, sends out scouts who confirm the lepers' report. This verse marks the king's dawning realization that the enemy has fled, leaving behind a miraculous supply for the starving city.
The Syrian army had a plan, but it was based on a flawed understanding of their enemy. They thought they had the Israelites cornered.
The Syrian army believed they had the Israelites exactly where they wanted them. Their strategy was to wait for the desperate Israelites to emerge from the besieged city, weakened by hunger, and then capture them. This reveals a common tactic of the enemy: to exploit our weaknesses and perceived desperation. They assume we'll act out of fear or necessity, not faith.
While the enemy plotted in the dark, God was orchestrating a divine surprise. Their clever plan was about to backfire spectacularly.
The enemy's meticulous plan was completely unaware of God's supernatural intervention. The very reason the Syrians had left their camp (to stage an ambush) was a sign of their own fear and disarray, not Israelite weakness. God often works in ways that confound human logic and enemy assumptions. He can turn the tables in an instant, using the enemy's own strategies against them.
