This isn't just about secrets coming out; the original Greek hints at a particularly thorough covering, like something completely wrapped up and hidden from sight. It reminds us that no matter how well we think we've concealed our true selves, God sees every layer, and nothing truly stays hidden from Him.
Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus is warning his followers about the hypocrisy of the religious leaders, urging them not to imitate their hidden corruption. He stresses that every secret thing, especially the deceptive teachings and practices of the Pharisees, will eventually be exposed, while the simple truth spoken by his disciples will be openly proclaimed. This leads directly into his instruction for his disciples to speak boldly and without fear, for their words will be heard.
Ever feel like secrets are safe forever? Jesus says otherwise. This verse is a bold declaration about what eventually comes to light.
Jesus states with absolute certainty: "Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known." This isn't just a possibility; it's a guarantee.
The Unavoidable Exposure
The original Greek word for 'covered up' suggests something completely concealed, like being wrapped up and hidden from view. Jesus is saying that no matter how cleverly we try to hide things – our true motives, hidden sins, or secret beliefs – they will eventually be exposed. This applies to both good and bad.
Divine Oversight
This truth rests on God's nature. He sees everything. What's hidden from human eyes is laid bare before Him. This is a powerful reminder that our actions and intentions are never truly secret. God's perfect knowledge means that ultimately, everything will be brought into the light.
Jesus was speaking to a culture where outward religious performance often hid inner corruption. What does this verse reveal about that kind of hiddenness?
Jesus uses this powerful statement as a direct challenge to hypocrisy. The religious leaders of His day often presented a spotless exterior while harboring corrupt hearts and hidden agendas.
The Danger of a Hidden Heart

This verse warns that such outward appearances are temporary. The "covered up" refers to things like secret sins, pride, and selfish ambition, which might be masked by religious actions or fair words. These hidden things, Jesus insists, will not remain hidden forever.
The Day of Reckoning
While some things may be revealed during our lifetime, the ultimate revelation will come on the day of judgment. This is when all hidden motives and secret sins will be fully exposed, not just to God, but perhaps even to the whole world. The contrast is stark: the genuine faith of Jesus' followers, though perhaps obscure now, will be openly celebrated, while hidden hypocrisy will be brought to shame.
Jesus uses this exact phrase to encourage his followers not to fear persecution, highlighting that what they speak in private will eventually be proclaimed publicly.
Mark 4:22This passage links the idea of revelation to the purpose of Jesus' teachings, emphasizing that nothing is meant to remain hidden forever, but rather to be brought to light.
Ecclesiastes 12:14This Old Testament book concludes by stating that God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether good or evil, echoing the certainty of ultimate revelation.
Romans 2:16Paul writes about the day when God will judge people's secrets through Jesus Christ, reinforcing the idea that all hidden motives and actions will be brought to light.
