2 Kings 17:24-29

What does 2 Kings 17:24-29 mean?

This passage doesn't just describe a population swap; it highlights the Assyrian king's deliberate strategy to break the identity of Israel by replacing them with a mix of foreign peoples. By scattering and then re-settling these diverse groups, he aimed to prevent any unified resistance and dissolve the very concept of "Israel."

And the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the people of Israel. And they took possession of Samaria and lived in its cities. And at the beginning of their dwelling there, they did not fear the LORD. Therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which killed some of them. So the king of Assyria was told, “The nations that you have carried away and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the law of the god of the land. Therefore he has sent lions among them, and behold, they are killing them, because they do not know the law of the god of the land.” Then the king of Assyria commanded, “Send there one of the priests whom you carried away from there, and let him go and dwell there and teach them the law of the god of the land.” So one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and lived in Bethel and taught them how they should fear the LORD. But every nation still made gods of its own and put them in the shrines of the high places that the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities in which they lived.

What 2 Kings 17:24-29 means

After conquering the northern kingdom of Israel, the Assyrian king deports the native Israelites and repopulates their cities with people from various conquered lands. This act sets the stage for the syncretistic religious practices and the distinct cultural identity that will come to define the Samaritans in the eyes of later Jews. The following verses will detail how these new inhabitants, unfamiliar with Israel's God, began to worship Him alongside their own gods, leading to a unique and, from a Jerusalem perspective, impure religious system.

Forced Migration and Cultural Erasure

Imagine your home being taken, your people scattered, and strangers moving in. This wasn't just a political move; it was a deliberate strategy to break a nation's spirit.

The Northern Kingdom of Israel, also known as Samaria, had been conquered by the Assyrian Empire. In a brutal act of cultural and political control, the Assyrians forcibly removed the Israelites from their land.

Then, they brought in people from other conquered territories – Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim. These groups were transplanted into the cities of Samaria, essentially erasing the Israelite presence and identity. This wasn't just about occupying territory; it was about dismantling a people's heritage and loyalty to their God.

Seeds of a Mixed Society

When people from vastly different backgrounds are thrown together, new ways of living – and worshipping – begin to emerge. What happens next is fascinatingly complicated.

The arrival of these new populations in Samaria created a religiously and culturally mixed society. The original inhabitants of these lands worshipped their own gods, and they brought those practices with them.

When they began to experience plagues and difficulties in their new home, they attributed it to the God of the land. However, they didn't abandon their own gods; instead, they incorporated the worship of Yahweh into their existing polytheistic practices. This syncretism, this blending of worship, is the origin of the religious tensions that would later define the Samaritans and their relationship with Judah.
