This 'ministry of death' carried glory, but it was also 'being brought to an end.' Why would God institute a glorious system that was destined to fade away?
The phrase 'ministry of death' is striking. It points to the Law's function in revealing sin and its consequence – death. However, the crucial part is that this ministry was temporary.
Temporary and Transitionary
Its glory was real, but it was a glory destined to pass. This wasn't a failure of the Law, but a deliberate part of God's plan. The Law was a powerful, awe-inspiring tutor, but a tutor's job is to prepare students for the teacher or the next stage of learning.
Pointing Beyond Itself
The Law's temporary nature and its focus on death were designed to push people to look for something more – a permanent solution to sin and death. Its fading glory was a signpost, pointing towards the enduring glory of the New Covenant in Christ.
