God spoke directly, but then handed the commandments to Moses. Why the switch, and what does it reveal about God's plan?
Deuteronomy 5:22 highlights a critical shift: God's direct communication through the Ten Commandments is immediately followed by Him entrusting the stone tablets to Moses.
God's Chosen Intermediary
- Human Frailty vs. Divine Grace: The people's reaction (Deuteronomy 5:24-27) showed they couldn't bear God's direct voice. They were terrified and asked Moses to be the intermediary. This reveals a key theological truth: humanity, in its fallen state, cannot stand in God's pure, fiery presence.
- Moses' Unique Role: God designates Moses as the receiver and dispenser of His written Word. This establishes Moses as a prophet and mediator, crucial for conveying God's will to the people in a way they could understand and receive. The rest of the Law would be communicated through him (as verse 22 implies by stating God 'added no more' directly).
This transition underscores that while God's Word is divine, He often works through human vessels to communicate it, making His message accessible and ensuring a clear channel of relationship between Himself and His people.
