2 Corinthians 11:3-4

It's easy to focus on the serpent and Eve, but notice Paul's fear is for your thoughts being corrupted, not just falling into outward sin. He's highlighting how the enemy's primary target is our inner world, twisting our affections away from Christ's truth. This reveals the crucial battleground for our faith is often within our own minds.
But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Paul is passionately defending his apostleship against rivals in Corinth who are questioning his authority and message. He's expressed his deep concern that these false apostles are subtly distorting the truth of the Gospel, just as the serpent cunningly deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden. This fear that the Corinthians might be led away from their genuine commitment to Christ is what fuels the warnings and exhortations that follow in this chapter.
Ever feel like your thoughts are being twisted in a subtle way? Paul points to an age-old tactic used by the enemy.
Paul draws a direct line from the Garden of Eden to the believers in Corinth. The serpent didn't use force; he used cunning and deceit to lead Eve astray. This wasn't just about eating a piece of fruit; it was about corrupting her understanding of God and His Word. The goal was to fracture her sincere devotion to God.
This same strategy is at work today. Deception often sneaks in through twists of truth, half-truths, or appealing lies that sound good on the surface. It aims to make us question God's goodness, His Word, or His commands, thereby weakening our commitment to Him.
What does it mean to have a 'sincere and pure devotion,' and why is it so precious?
Paul contrasts the danger of being led astray with the ideal: a 'sincere and pure devotion to Christ.' This isn't a lukewarm or divided affection.
The enemy’s goal is to contaminate this pure devotion, to introduce compromises or doubts that dilute our commitment. Maintaining this requires constant vigilance and a steadfast anchoring in the truth of God's Word.
