This verse has a sharp turn. King Asa, who was generally good, made a decision that incurred God's strong disapproval. What can we learn from his mistake?
The second half of the verse delivers a sobering rebuke to King Asa. He had previously trusted God, but in this instance, he chose a political alliance over divine reliance.
Asa's Foolishness:
- Misplaced Trust: Instead of seeking God's help or trusting in the LORD's power, Asa took silver and gold from the temple treasures to pay the king of Aram for military assistance (see 2 Chronicles 16:2-3). This was a betrayal of his covenant with God.
- Consequences: The prophet's message is clear: Asa's foolish choice will lead to 'wars.' By relying on human strength and wealth instead of God's provision, he invited further conflict and trouble into his kingdom. It shows that even a generally faithful person can make a decision with severe spiritual and practical repercussions.
