Rehoboam had a choice: listen to the seasoned elders or his friends. His decision set a nation on a path of destruction.
The King's Crossroads
When King Rehoboam inherited the throne, he was faced with a crucial decision. The people of Israel, weary from King Solomon's heavy burdens, asked for relief. Rehoboam first sought advice from the older men who had served his father.
- The Elders' Wisdom: They urged him to be a servant to the people, to speak kindly, and to lighten their load. This was wise, compassionate counsel rooted in years of experience governing.
- The Young Men's Advice: But Rehoboam also consulted his own peers, men who had grown up with him. Their advice was starkly different: double down on the oppression. They told him to show strength by increasing the burden, making his father's rule seem gentle in comparison.
Rehoboam chose the path of arrogance and severity, following the counsel of the young men.
