Why did King Rehoboam choose a path of oppression? The answer lies in the company he kept and the advice he took.
The Seduction of the Young
Rehoboam had a crucial decision to make: would he lighten the heavy burden his father Solomon had placed on Israel, or increase it? He first consulted the elders who had served his father. They advised him to speak kindly and reduce the people's load. This was wise, seasoned counsel.
But then, Rehoboam turned to his own peers – the young men who had grown up with him. They offered advice based on pride, arrogance, and a lust for power, not on wisdom or compassion. They told him to assert his authority with an even heavier hand. Sadly, Rehoboam chose their counsel over the elders'.
This shows us a timeless truth: surrounding yourself with people who echo your own prideful desires, rather than those who speak God's truth (even when it's hard to hear), leads to destruction.
