What's so striking here is that God wasn't waiting for Samuel to ask for a leader; He proactively revealed His plan to Samuel the day before Saul was even on the scene. It's a powerful reminder that God's purpose is already in motion, often long before we see the pieces fall into place.
Now the day before Saul came, the LORD had revealed to Samuel: “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen my people, because their cry has come to me.” When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke to you! He it is who shall restrain my people.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Just the day before, God had privately told Samuel that a young man named Saul would arrive, and He even gave Samuel specific instructions about him. This divine whisper to Samuel is happening right before Saul unexpectedly shows up in town, setting the stage for their dramatic, divinely orchestrated meeting.
Before Saul even showed up, God was already at work behind the scenes. Isn't it amazing how God speaks before we even know we need to listen?
This verse drops us right into a divine conversation. Samuel is going about his day, and the LORD reveals something crucial to him.
The Lord's Initiative
God didn't wait for Samuel to ask or for the situation to get desperate. The text says 'the LORD had revealed to Samuel.' This shows God's proactive nature in guiding His people and His prophets. He often speaks before we even realize a problem exists or a solution is needed.
Divine Foresight
The revelation was specifically about Saul's arrival 'the day before.' This isn't just a casual heads-up; it's God demonstrating His perfect knowledge of future events and His intentionality in orchestrating them. He knew Saul was coming, and He prepared Samuel for it.
Samuel was ready to receive God's word. What does it take for us to be ready when God wants to speak?
While God is the initiator, Samuel's role as a prophet meant he was in a posture of listening and obedience. His very identity as a prophet implies a life dedicated to hearing and relaying God's messages.
A Life of Listening
Prophets in the Old Testament were called to be conduits of God's voice. This required a spiritual sensitivity and a deep reliance on the Holy Spirit. Samuel's entire life was oriented towards this purpose.

Receiving Divine Counsel
When God reveals something, it's because the recipient is in a position to receive it and act upon it. Samuel, through his faithfulness, was ready for this specific instruction. It wasn't a random message; it was given to someone prepared to handle it.
