The phrase "about the ninth hour" isn't just a time marker; it points to a specific moment of prayer for Cornelius, highlighting his established devotion and that his earnest prayers were precisely why an angel was sent. This wasn't a random appearance, but a divine response at a sacred time, showing God honors those who regularly seek Him.
About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, “Cornelius.” And he stared at him in terror and said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter. He is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage introduces Cornelius, a devout Roman centurion in Caesarea, who, despite being a Gentile, deeply reveres God and practices acts of charity. While praying and fasting at the customary hour of afternoon worship, he has a clear vision of an angel who speaks directly to him, marking a pivotal moment where God initiates communication with a non-Jew. This vision sets the stage for God's subsequent plan to bring the Gospel to the Gentile world, a plan that will involve both Cornelius and the Apostle Peter.
Was this vision just a dream, or something more concrete? God's message often comes with undeniable clarity.
The text highlights that Cornelius saw the angel 'evidently' or 'clearly'. This wasn't a fuzzy, half-remembered dream, but a distinct and unmistakable appearance. The word used emphasizes that the vision was not confused or vague, but sharp and easily perceived. It’s a reminder that when God sends a message or an encounter, He makes it clear. We don't have to guess if it was real; the divine nature of the experience leaves no room for doubt.
Why that specific time? Understanding the 'ninth hour' reveals Cornelius's heart for God.
The vision occurred around the 'ninth hour' of the day, which corresponds to about 3 p.m. This was a significant time for prayer among devout Jews, often coinciding with the evening sacrifice at the Temple. The fact that Cornelius was praying at this specific hour shows he had already embraced Jewish customs of worship and was actively seeking God. His prayers and devotion weren't casual; they were structured and intentional, marking him as someone already attentive to God's presence.
