Imagine seeing a powerful, unstoppable force. What goes through your mind? The people of Beth-shemesh faced something similar, and their reaction speaks volumes about God's holiness.
The Awe of Holiness
The ark of the covenant, representing God's presence, had been captured by the Philistines and brought devastation. When it was finally returned, the men of Beth-shemesh witnessed a miraculous sign: oxen drawing the ark on a new cart, undisturbed, towards their city. But their awe quickly turned to terror when some of them dared to look into the ark.
God struck down seventy of them. This wasn't a capricious act; it was a fierce demonstration of His holiness. God's very presence, when approached improperly or with irreverence, is utterly consuming. The men of Beth-shemesh realized they were in the presence of a God so pure, so set apart, that no one could casually stand before Him without consequence.
