Goliath looked at David and saw nothing. Nothing that could possibly pose a threat, anyway. How often do we dismiss people, or even ourselves, based on outward appearances?
The David Dilemma
When Goliath saw David, the Philistine's reaction was pure contempt. Why? Because David fit none of the criteria Goliath expected in a warrior:
- Youth: He was young, barely out of boyhood. Strength and experience were what mattered on the battlefield.
- Appearance: "Ruddy and handsome" might describe a shepherd boy, perhaps even someone delicate, not a hardened fighter.
Goliath's entire worldview was built on physical might and intimidating presence. David, by these standards, was a joke.
God's Different Standard
But the text hints at something Goliath missed. While Goliath focused on the physical, God was looking at David's heart. This isn't the first time God has chosen the unexpected:
- God chose Joseph, the overlooked son, to save a family.
- God chose Gideon, hiding from enemies, to lead an army.
- God chose David, a shepherd boy, to become king.
God's choices often defy human logic and societal expectations.
