When Samuel arrived to anoint the next king, his eyes immediately fell on a strong, impressive candidate. Sound familiar? We often judge by appearances, but God sees differently.
Judging by the Outward Appearance
Samuel, the prophet of God, made an immediate, strong impression when he saw Eliab. Eliab was likely tall, handsome, and carried himself with a noble air – everything you might expect from a king.
- First Impressions Matter (to us): Samuel's thought, 'Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him,' shows how easily we can be swayed by outward qualities. We see someone who looks like they have it all together and assume God must be with them or has chosen them.
- God's Different Standard: This outward assessment, however, is exactly what God corrects. He's not looking for the most polished or the most physically imposing. He looks for something deeper.
