What's so striking here is that Peter doesn't just say how to lead, but why and how much. The emphasis isn't on the action of shepherding, but on the attitude behind it – it's about a willing heart, driven by God's example, not by personal profit or obligation. This isn't just a job description for leaders; it's a call to a heart posture that echoes God's own love for His people.
shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Peter is addressing church leaders, calling them to a selfless and willing shepherding of God's people, urging them to lead with integrity and genuine care. This exhortation follows his instructions for elders to live exemplary lives and to humble themselves under God's mighty hand, setting the stage for how they are to serve. Immediately after, he warns all believers, young and old, to be alert and sober in their faith because the devil prowls like a lion, a challenge that requires devoted spiritual leadership.
Leadership isn't just about having authority; it's about the spirit in which you lead. Peter calls leaders to a specific kind of heart posture.
Peter uses the powerful image of a shepherd to describe leadership within the church. This isn't a managerial role, but one of deep care and responsibility for God's people – 'the flock of God.'
Two Key Attitudes:
What does it mean to 'exercise oversight' in a way that truly honors God?
The word for 'oversight' here implies careful watching, guarding, and caring for the well-being of the flock. It's about being attentive to their needs, protecting them from harm (both spiritual and practical), and guiding them toward spiritual maturity.
Crucially, Peter states this oversight should be exercised 'as God would have you.' This grounds leadership not in personal preference or popular opinion, but in aligning with God's heart and His purposes for His people. It means seeking His wisdom and direction in every decision.
