Why would Israel’s king create new gods when they already had the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? Jeroboam’s actions here kick off a spiral of sin.
Jeroboam, facing a divided kingdom, sought a political solution rather than trusting God. His decision to create golden calves wasn't about replacing God entirely, but about redirecting worship away from Jerusalem. He wanted his people to stay within his territory, making it easier to rule. This act, however, fundamentally corrupted true worship by offering a tangible, man-made substitute for the invisible, Almighty God. Idolatry is always an attempt to control God or make Him fit our own limited understanding and desires, rather than submitting to His reality.
