Jeroboam's fear led him to a drastic, and ultimately destructive, decision. What was his solution to keep his kingdom intact?
Creating a New Religious Center
To prevent his people from returning to Rehoboam, Jeroboam devised a plan to redirect their worship. Instead of letting them go to Jerusalem, he decided to establish his own religious centers.
He set up golden calves, first in Bethel and then in Dan, creating alternative places of worship within his own territory. This was a direct violation of the Mosaic Law, which prohibited idolatry and mandated worship at the single, chosen sanctuary.
Jeroboam's motivation was political: to solidify his own rule and prevent any religious ties that could reconnect his kingdom to Judah and its king. However, this act of political expediency led Israel down a path of idolatry and spiritual rebellion that would have devastating consequences.
